Siaya Governor James Orengo has intensified his political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election, with plans surrounding a new political vehicle emerging as opposition leaders continue reorganising their formations.
The development comes amid growing competition over who will lead the opposition into the 2027 presidential contest, with Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna having previously expressed competing ambitions within the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Orengo’s new political direction
Orengo has been associated with efforts to transform Linda Mwananchi from a political movement into a formal political party capable of participating in the 2027 election.
In August, the Siaya governor said the movement would transition into a political party and insisted that its agenda would be national rather than confined to Nyanza.
He said the proposed political organisation would seek to defend the Constitution, protect citizens’ rights and promote accountable government.
The development has placed Orengo at the centre of the wider debate over the political future of the opposition following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and the subsequent realignment of several political parties.
Orengo has also presented himself as a presidential contender, saying competing ambitions should be allowed before an agreed process produces a single opposition candidate.
In an interview reported by the Daily Nation, he argued that opposition unity did not necessarily mean eliminating presidential ambitions at an early stage, but rather having a credible nomination process before settling on one candidate.
Logo and party plans
The unveiling of a political party logo has added another dimension to the preparations for the 2027 polls.
However, developments within Linda Mwananchi have since moved quickly.
On September 26, the movement held a leadership retreat and formally endorsed Sifuna as its leader and presidential candidate.
The group also announced plans to unveil the political party through which Sifuna intends to contest the presidency.
Orengo was absent from the retreat.
According to members of the movement quoted by the Daily Nation, Orengo had sent his apologies because he was attending to a sick family member.
His absence was nevertheless closely watched because of his previously stated presidential ambitions.
Sifuna emerges as Linda Mwananchi candidate
The latest decision means the political landscape surrounding Linda Mwananchi has changed considerably from earlier in the year, when both Orengo and Sifuna were being discussed in connection with the movement’s presidential ambitions.
The movement now says Sifuna is its presidential candidate and is preparing to unveil his political vehicle in early October.
Citizen Digital reported that the leadership also agreed to support Embakasi East MP Babu Owino’s Nairobi gubernatorial ambitions through The Mwananchi Party, while former Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza would pursue her political ambitions through the Umoja na Maendeleo Party.
The development has also highlighted the complicated question of political vehicles within the opposition.
Battle over political parties
Sifuna’s camp has faced challenges in securing a party through which he can contest the 2027 presidential election.
Recent reporting indicates that attempts to use or rebrand the United Democratic Party have faced objections from officials claiming the proposed changes were not authorised by the duly elected party leadership.
There has also been a separate dispute surrounding the use of the name “Ukombozi”, after Kalonzo Musyoka’s camp unveiled The Ukombozi Alliance while Sifuna’s allies had been pursuing a similar political identity.
These developments have made the choice of party an important part of the opposition’s preparations for the next election.
Orengo’s role in the wider opposition
Away from Linda Mwananchi, Orengo has also become involved in the restructuring of the wider opposition.
On September 21, opposition leaders rebranded Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition as the Ukombozi Alliance, with Orengo among the senior politicians involved in the coalition’s new structure.
Recent reports have also indicated that Orengo is taking a leadership role in the restructured coalition as opposition parties seek to coordinate their activities ahead of 2027.
The developments leave Orengo operating within a rapidly changing opposition landscape, with several political parties and movements positioning themselves ahead of the August 10, 2027 General Election.
For now, the emergence of a new political party identity associated with Orengo adds another layer to the ongoing realignment, even as Linda Mwananchi has formally settled on Sifuna as its presidential candidate.
The competing political formations are expected to become clearer as parties meet electoral and registration requirements ahead of the 2027 polls.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has set October 15, 2026 as a key deadline for parties intending to participate in the election to submit details of their authorised officials.
