President William Ruto has appointed Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) Musalia Mudavadi, Aden Duale, and Salim Mvurya to temporarily take on additional ministerial responsibilities in an acting capacity.
The changes, announced on Saturday by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, aim to ensure smooth government operations as new appointments await parliamentary vetting.
Musalia Mudavadi, who currently serves as the Prime CS and CS for Foreign Affairs, has been given the additional responsibility of overseeing the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy.
This move consolidates his leadership role, further strengthening his influence in the government.
Aden Duale, who holds the position of CS for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, will now also manage the Agriculture and Livestock Development docket.
This dual role highlights the growing importance of coordinating environmental and agricultural policies in the face of climate change challenges.
Meanwhile, Salim Mvurya, who is the CS for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, will serve as the acting Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry.
Mvurya’s appointment follows his recent transfer from the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry after Kipchumba Murkomen was nominated for the Interior Ministry position.
These new assignments come on the heels of President Ruto’s Cabinet reshuffle on December 19, 2024.
In that reshuffle, Kipchumba Murkomen was moved from his role overseeing Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports to head the Interior Ministry.
Mvurya, who previously held the Investments docket, was appointed to fill Murkomen’s position.
Additionally, former Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui was nominated to take over the Trade Ministry, while Mutahi Kagwe, a former CS under the Uhuru Kenyatta administration, was nominated to lead the Agriculture Ministry.
William Kabogo has been nominated for the position of CS for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, succeeding Mudavadi’s additional role.
As these appointments undergo the parliamentary approval process, Koskei emphasized that the acting Cabinet Secretaries will temporarily manage the vacant ministries.
Members of Parliament are expected to vet the appointees on January 14, 2025.
The reshuffle is part of a broader restructuring effort following President Ruto’s appointment of Kithure Kindiki, the former CS for Interior, as the Deputy President in October, following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.
The Cabinet changes reflect the administration’s continued push for effective governance and a streamlined leadership structure as the country moves forward.
