President William Ruto has once again found himself at the centre of an online debate after a seemingly ordinary farm moment in Kilgoris, Narok County, drew attention to the luxury timepiece on his wrist.
Ruto recently shared images of himself tending to cattle at his Kilgoris farm, appearing relaxed as he interacted with a young calf.
While the photographs were meant to highlight his hands-on engagement with livestock, eagle-eyed Kenyans quickly shifted their attention to the President’s watch.
The timepiece was widely identified as an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in 18-carat yellow gold, with reports putting the retail value of a comparable model at about Sh10.3 million.
However, it is important to note that the exact reference and purchase price of the watch cannot be independently established from the photographs alone.
Audemars Piguet’s official catalogue confirms that it produces Royal Oak chronographs featuring 18-carat yellow gold cases and bracelets.
Luxury watch meets farm life
The striking contrast between the President’s expensive-looking accessory and the rural setting quickly became the talking point.
Ruto was pictured among cattle, checking on calves and participating in routine farm activities.
Earlier in August, Ruto was also photographed inspecting and feeding cattle at the same farm, with images showing modern cattle sheds and different sections of the livestock operation.
Days later, footage showed Ruto carrying and bottle-feeding a young calf, reinforcing the image of a president taking a personal interest in his livestock.
But the latest photographs have generated a different conversation: whether a president engaging in farming activities should be wearing a luxury watch reportedly worth millions of shillings.
For some observers, the watch was simply another indication of Ruto’s well-known taste for high-end timepieces. For others, the image offered an uncomfortable contrast at a time when many Kenyan households continue to struggle with the rising cost of living.
Why the images sparked controversy
The controversy is less about farming itself and more about symbolism.
A watch reportedly worth more than Sh10 million represents an amount of money far beyond the reach of the overwhelming majority of Kenyans.
Consequently, its appearance in a casual farm photograph invited comparisons between presidential luxury and the financial pressures experienced by ordinary citizens.
The debate also comes against the backdrop of Ruto’s frequent public messaging around agriculture, hustler empowerment and improving household incomes.
Critics are therefore likely to view the photograph through an economic lens, while his supporters may argue that personal possessions should not determine whether a leader can participate in agricultural activities.
There is also an important distinction between the reported value of a particular luxury watch and the President’s actual purchase price.

In June 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development announced a Sh5 billion livestock investment initiative targeting more than 350,000 pastoralists across 21 arid and semi-arid counties.
The programme is intended to improve livestock production, financing, insurance, market access and value addition.
Agriculture remains a major part of Kenya’s economy
Beyond the social-media debate surrounding the watch, Ruto’s farm images touch on a much bigger issue facing Kenya: the importance of livestock to millions of households.
The government’s National Livestock Agenda describes the livestock sector as a major contributor to Kenya’s economy, supplying meat, milk and other products while supporting household incomes and employment.
Kenya’s National Agri-Food Systems Investment Plan also reports that milk production increased from 3.98 billion litres in 2019 to 5.33 billion litres in 2024, representing growth of 33.9%.
At the same time, the plan notes that production costs and consumer prices remain important challenges for the sector.
The Ministry of Agriculture has separately described dairy farming as vital to incomes, employment and food security, while calling for improvements in animal feeds, fodder, genetics, milk storage and quality.
A photograph that became a political conversation
What began as a simple picture of President Ruto caring for a calf has consequently become another example of how seemingly ordinary images involving public figures can trigger wider political and economic discussions.
The photograph combines two very different images: the President portraying himself as a hands-on farmer and a luxury Swiss timepiece associated with wealth and exclusivity.
Whether the watch’s reported multimillion-shilling valuation ultimately changes public opinion about Ruto is another matter.
But the online reaction demonstrates why even a quiet moment at a farm can become politically charged when it involves a sitting president.
For now, the calf may have been the intended subject of Ruto’s farm visit, but it was the watch on his wrist that ended up stealing much of the spotlight.
