Three individuals were lynched by mobs in separate incidents across Kisumu and Homa Bay counties, with police warning against the growing trend of mob justice and launching investigations into the events.
The first incident occurred in Sindo Town, Suba South, Homa Bay County, when a middle-aged woman was killed by an enraged mob over allegations that she had stolen a one-and-a-half-year-old child.
According to reports, the woman allegedly took the child and handed her to a motorbike rider in an attempt to flee.
When the child’s mother discovered her daughter was missing, she confronted the woman, but the accused denied any knowledge of the child’s whereabouts.
The mother raised the alarm, which led to the mob attacking the woman with crude weapons.
She was later rushed to Suba Subcounty Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
Deputy County Commissioner Beatrice Odira confirmed the incident and issued a stern warning to the public against taking justice into their own hands.
The second incident took place in Tumaini, Nyalenda, Kisumu County, on Friday night, when two suspected robbers were lynched following a failed robbery attempt.
Three suspects on a motorbike ambushed a female pedestrian, attacking her with a metal rod before stealing her bag and phone.
The victim managed to raise an alarm, prompting members of the public to give chase.
The mob cornered two of the suspects and beat them to death on the spot, while the third suspect managed to escape on the motorbike.
The female victim, who sustained injuries during the robbery, was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) and is currently recovering.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the remaining suspect involved in the attack.
The increasing incidents of mob lynching have raised concerns, with law enforcement officials urging the public to refrain from such actions and to instead hand over suspected criminals to the authorities.
Police emphasized that vigilante justice only exacerbates violence and undermines the justice system, calling on citizens to assist in legal proceedings by reporting crimes rather than taking matters into their own hands.
