Kenyans showcased their unmatched running prowess once again on Sunday, November 17, securing top victories in both the men’s and women’s events at the prestigious Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon Three-Runway System 10km International Race.
Held at the newly expanded Hong Kong International Airport, the race offered a unique backdrop that didn’t stop Kenyan athletes from dominating the competition.
Loice Chemnung led the women’s race, crossing the finish line in a comfortable 30:24, while compatriot Janeth Chepngetich claimed second place with a time of 30:55, 29 seconds behind Chemnung.
The Kenyan dominance continued with Lilian Kasait, Judy Kemboi, and Miriam Chebet rounding out the top five.
Chemnung’s victory came just weeks after setting a record at the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon in October, where she clocked 1:07:27, breaking the course record by a massive four minutes.
However, despite her impressive performance in Hong Kong, she did not break the late Agnes Tirop’s 10K record of 30:01, which still stands from 2021.
In the men’s race, Kenya’s Samwel Mailu claimed first place with a time of 27:29, followed closely by Vincent Langat, who finished just one second behind at 28:00.
Daniel Kinyanjui, a former 3000m and 5000m runner, finished in fifth place with a time of 28:38.
The race also offered lucrative prize money, with both the men’s and women’s winners earning Sh 8,443,129 (USD 65,000) each.
Second place finishers walked away with Sh 3,896,829 (USD 30,000), and third place earned Sh 1.9 million (USD 15,000).
All top 10 finishers were awarded cash prizes, with totals reaching Sh 29.4 million (USD 227,000) for the seven Kenyan podium finishers.
