Senate Speaker Declares Gloria Orwoba’s Seat Vacant After UDA Expulsion

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially declared the Senate seat held by nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba vacant following her expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

The announcement was made through a special gazette notice published on Tuesday, formalizing her removal from office.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that pursuant to Article 101 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, a seat of the Member of the Senate elected under Article 98 (1)(b) of the Constitution, held by Senator Gloria Orwoba, has become vacant with effect from the 21st May, 2025,” the notice reads.

Orwoba’s expulsion follows a decision by the UDA Disciplinary Committee, which found her guilty of violating the party’s Code of Conduct, including making public statements that allegedly harmed the party’s image and repeatedly failing to respond to disciplinary summons.

On May 19, the UDA Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) ratified the Disciplinary Committee’s recommendation to expel Orwoba.

UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar confirmed the party had formally notified the Senate Speaker of the decision, urging immediate action to replace her.

“Pursuant to Article 29 of the UDA Party Constitution, and having exhaustively deliberated on the matters before it, the Party’s Disciplinary Committee has resolved that Senator Gloria Orwoba be expelled from the membership of the United Democratic Alliance with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Following her expulsion, the party nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi from Kimilili Constituency in Bungoma County to fill the resulting vacancy.

Orwoba challenged her expulsion in the High Court, but her application was dismissed by Justice Lawrence Mugambi on May 20.

The judge ruled that the application was procedurally defective and noted that she had introduced new parties to the case without the court’s approval.

“The application is incompetent and is rejected,” Justice Mugambi stated, effectively ending Orwoba’s bid to remain in office.

The expulsion marks the latest in a string of disciplinary actions by UDA as the ruling party enforces internal discipline ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With the vacancy now declared, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is expected to formalize Wakwabubi’s nomination in the coming days.
