Why Can’t I DM on TikTok?

Age Restrictions

One of the main reasons you may be unable to send direct messages on TikTok is age. TikTok restricts access to DMs for users under the age of 16. If your account was registered with a birth date that indicates you’re younger than 16, you won’t be able to use the messaging feature, even if it was an error.

To protect younger users, TikTok has strict safety measures in place. These include limiting certain features like messaging, commenting, and live streaming.

You Haven’t Verified Your Phone Number

TikTok requires users to verify their phone number before they can send or receive DMs. If you haven’t linked or confirmed your phone number with your TikTok account, the messaging option might not appear.

To verify:

Go to your profile.
Tap the three-line menu at the top right.
Select Settings and privacy > Account > Phone number.
Enter and confirm your phone number.

Your Privacy Settings Are Too Strict

TikTok lets users control who can send them direct messages. If your settings only allow messages from friends, you won’t be able to DM someone unless both of you follow each other.

To adjust your privacy settings:

Open the Settings and privacy menu.
Tap Privacy.
Select Direct messages.

You’re Using a Business Account

You can switch back to a personal account by:

Going to Settings and privacy.
