A tragic accident in Kericho County claimed the lives of a mother and her child, while another person was injured, after the boda boda motorcycle they were riding on crashed on Friday evening at Samisbei along the Kaplelartet–Kapsorok road.
Kaplelartet Location Chief Robert Korir confirmed that the accident occurred when the motorcycle’s brakes failed.
The young child, approximately seven years old, died instantly, while the mother, who sustained severe injuries, passed away en route to the hospital. She was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The family had been returning home from a prayer day event at Kakibei Girls Secondary School when the rider lost control of the motorcycle while navigating a steep section of the road.
Chief Korir called on boda boda operators to be more cautious, particularly along this stretch of road, which he identified as a known accident hotspot.
He pointed out that just recently, a lorry carrying fencing posts had overturned at the same location, though its occupants were fortunate to escape with only minor injuries.
The bodies of the victims have been transported to Sigowet Sub-county Hospital mortuary for further handling.
