Seven Families Left Homeless After Fire in Pumwani Highrise

Seven families in the Rokongo area of Pumwani Highrise, Kamukunji, were left homeless after a fire tore through their homes on Wednesday evening.

The blaze reportedly began around 6:30 p.m., quickly spreading and engulfing the homes, leaving residents displaced.

While there were no fatalities, one individual, identified as Ali Kiragu, sustained a broken hand during the chaos and was taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment.

Emergency services from Nairobi City County responded swiftly, with firefighters managing to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

According to The Kamukunji Voice, local community members have already begun organizing aid, including temporary shelter and essential supplies, for the affected families.

Images and videos obtained by media show residents surveying the charred remains of their homes, with some attempting to salvage what little they could from the debris.

This incident marks the second fire in the area in just two days. On Tuesday, a separate blaze erupted in the nearby Shauri Moyo area of Pumwani.

Firefighters responded promptly, successfully extinguishing the flames. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities in that incident either.

The frequent fires have raised growing concerns among residents. In a separate incident earlier this year, a fire broke out in May at around 3:00 a.m., destroying several stalls in the footwear section near Lamu Road in Pumwani, Majengo.

With multiple fire outbreaks reported in a short span, residents say the area is becoming alarmingly prone to such disasters, sparking calls for increased safety measures and better infrastructure to prevent future incidents.
