Kenya is today united in mourning following the shocking news of the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, a towering figure in Kenya’s political history and one of Africa’s most consequential leaders.
Leaders across the political divide have paid glowing tribute to a man whose life was deeply interwoven with the nation’s struggle for democracy, justice, and equity.
Deputy president Kithure Kindiki expressed deep sorrow and shock upon learning of Raila Odinga’s passing, describing him as “a patriotic and distinguished son of Kenya.”
“Raila believed that it is better for us to have an imperfect country struggling to perfect its value and institutional systems than to have no country at all,” Kindiki stated, lauding Odinga’s unwavering belief in Kenya and in Africa. He hailed Raila’s long and influential political career as “the most remarkable example of wit, energy, acumen and ability to make complex decisions rapidly.”
“Kenya mourns a statesman, visionary and revolutionary leader who served with dignified focus—one who put the people before self,” he added.
The Cabinet Secretary extended his heartfelt condolences to Raila’s family and friends, concluding his tribute with, “May his soul find rest in eternity.”
Martha Karua: “Rest in Peace, Kinara Wangu”
Veteran politician and long-time ally in Kenya’s pro-democracy movement, Martha Karua, also sent an emotional condolence message to Mama Ida Odinga and the Odinga family. Calling the news “shocking and sad,” Karua praised Raila as “a fearless defender of the people, a voice of the voiceless, and a steadfast comrade in the fight for the second liberation.”
In a heartfelt message to Ida Odinga, Karua wrote:
“It is with deep shock and profound sadness that I have received the news of the passing of your dear husband, father, friend, and great leader – Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga. Please accept my heartfelt condolences, and those of many who stand with you, your family, the people of Kenya, our continent of Africa, and indeed humanity at large.”
Karua highlighted Raila’s decades-long struggle for democracy, which included long detentions, personal sacrifice, and unrelenting courage in the face of authoritarianism. “Few lives have been so fully devoted to the cause of justice and democracy,” she noted, adding that “Kenya owes you and your family an unpayable debt of gratitude.”
“For over three decades, I had the honour of working alongside him, sometimes as an ally, sometimes as an opponent, but always united by a shared vision of a freer, fairer Kenya,” Karua reflected.
