President William Ruto pens heartfelt tribute to the late Raila Odinga


President William Ruto has led the country in mourning the death of former Prime Minister and political icon, the Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga, delivering a heartfelt tribute to a man he described as a tireless champion of justice, equity, and democracy.

In his statement, President Ruto expressed deep sorrow, noting that Raila’s passing is not just a personal loss, but a moment of reflection for the entire nation.

“Heartfelt condolences,” the President began. “For 20 years, our departed leader, the Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga, served the people of Lang’ata Constituency with unwavering dedication and distinction as their Member of Parliament.”

President Ruto praised Raila’s unwavering commitment to the country’s democratic ideals, highlighting his instrumental role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.

Most notably, he acknowledged Raila’s pivotal contribution to the historic 2010 Constitution, which he helped pass during his tenure as Kenya’s Prime Minister.

The President also offered a personal reflection, revealing the profound influence Raila had on him, especially during challenging moments in his own political journey.

“You helped me when I needed someone to stand by me just as you once stood by others. Baba, you may have departed, but we will work hard to honour what you stood for.”

As a mark of national respect, the body of the late statesman will lie-in-state at the  state House, a rare honour reserved for Kenya’s most revered leaders.

This gesture allows the Executive, Parliament, and the Judiciary, alongside the citizens of Kenya, to pay their final respects to a man whose legacy will endure for generations.

President Ruto concluded his message with a solemn commitment to uphold the ideals Raila fought for throughout his life, describing him as a true patriot and statesman whose memory will continue to guide the nation forward.
