Thousands gather at Nyayo Stadium as Kenya marks 62nd Jamhuri Day Celebrations

Thousands of Kenyans have already filled Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi to take part in the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations, commemorating the day Kenya became a fully independent republic.

The national holiday, observed annually on December 12, marks Kenya’s transition from colonial rule to sovereignty in 1964, when the country adopted a republican constitution and its first president was sworn in.

President William Ruto is leading the ceremony, which features cultural performances, military parades and national addresses, with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama attending as the chief guest of honour.

President Mahama arrived in Nairobi shortly after midnight ahead of the main event.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme “Tourism, Wildlife, Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE)”, highlighting Kenya’s rich wildlife heritage, world‑class tourist attractions and growing potential as an international business and tourism hub.

Government officials have emphasized the theme as part of a broader strategy to showcase Kenya’s tourism sector and attract both domestic visitors and international investment.
