Legendary musician Mzee Ngala claims Sh5 million promise by politicians yet to be fulfilled

Legendary Bango music icon Mzee Ngala has come out to lament after politicians allegedly failed to honour a Sh5 million financial pledge made to him during a high-profile event held in his honour late last year.

In December 2025, Mzee Ngala was celebrated at a colourful ceremony hosted by Principal Secretary Jacob Fikirini, aimed at recognising his immense contribution to Bango music and the coastal entertainment industry.

The event brought together musicians, cultural stakeholders, government officials and politicians, turning into a major celebration of the veteran artiste’s decades-long career.

Among the notable leaders in attendance was former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho, alongside other prominent political figures.

Speakers at the event praised Ngala as a pioneer who helped shape and preserve Bango music, a genre deeply rooted in coastal culture and history.

The ceremony was widely viewed as long-overdue recognition for a musician whose work has influenced generations.

Beyond the accolades and praise, the event also came with promises of financial support.

According to Mzee Ngala, several politicians publicly pledged monetary contributions to appreciate his legacy and help support him in his old age.

Collectively, the pledges reportedly amounted to Sh5 million.

Months later, the veteran musician says those promises remain unfulfilled.

Speaking in a candid interview with Coco FM, Mzee Ngala revealed that despite the public commitments and assurances made in front of a large audience, none of the pledged funds have been remitted to him.

He expressed disappointment, noting that he has waited patiently in the hope that the leaders would honour their word.

Ngala explained that while he was grateful for the recognition and respect shown to him during the event, the failure to follow through on the pledges has left him disheartened.

He added that such promises raised expectations not only for him but also for his family and supporters, who believed the pledges would translate into real support.

The revelation has once again sparked debate on how veteran artistes are treated after years of service to the cultural and creative industries.

Many musicians, especially those from older generations, have often struggled financially despite their significant contributions to Kenya’s music heritage.

Mzee Ngala’s case has also reignited conversations around accountability, particularly when financial promises are made publicly by leaders.

Cultural activists argue that honouring such pledges is crucial in restoring trust and ensuring that veteran artistes live with dignity.

As of now, the politicians mentioned have not publicly responded to Ngala’s claims.

The veteran musician says he remains hopeful that the pledges will eventually be honoured, but his story stands as a reminder of the challenges faced by many legendary artistes long after the spotlight fades.

Mzee Ngala remains one of the most respected figures in Bango music, with a legacy that continues to inspire younger musicians across the Coast and beyond.

Whether the promised Sh5 million will be delivered remains to be seen, but his contribution to Kenyan music history remains undisputed.
