Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has revealed plans to vie for the Nairobi senatorial seat, signaling a major political move ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interview with Radio 47, Jalang’o said he draws inspiration from former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who successfully transitioned from MP to Governor.
“There is nothing that stops me from becoming the Senator of Nairobi or even the governor. I have walked in various parts of the country and come to understand what people need. I can confirm that I will be vying for the Senate seat in Nairobi,” Jalang’o said, adding that he is fully prepared for the contest.
The announcement comes amid rising speculation fueled by Jalang’o’s recent appearances alongside Lands Principal Secretary and former Lang’ata MP Nixon Korir, as well as South C Ward MCA Abass Khalif, who has declared his intention to run for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat.
Observers suggest these alignments may be early moves ahead of next year’s polls.
Jalang’o’s declaration is likely to intensify Nairobi’s political landscape, with current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna facing growing pressure amid internal ODM disputes.
Last week, ODM Party leader Oburu Odinga criticized Sifuna over claims questioning Oburu’s legitimacy as party leader.
In a strongly worded letter, Oburu accused the party Secretary General of creating confusion among members by conflating personal opinions with official party policy.
Despite the internal wrangles, Sifuna has maintained his position, insisting he will not resign as ODM Secretary General and defending his decision to support President William Ruto’s government.
Jalang’o’s entry into the senatorial race adds a new dimension to Nairobi politics, with observers noting that the coming months could see more alignments and strategic moves ahead of the 2027 elections.
