Police arrest two suspected gang ringleaders in Kwale raid

Officers from the National Police Service have arrested two suspected gang ringleaders during a targeted early morning raid in Denyenye area, Kwale County, in a renewed crackdown on criminal groups operating along key transport corridors in the Coast region.

According to police, the suspects are believed to be key masterminds behind gangs that have been terrorising motorists, traders, and pedestrians along the busy Dongo Kundu Bypass and the Likoni–Ukunda Road.

The two highways serve as vital links connecting Mombasa to the South Coast and other parts of Kwale County, making them critical for commerce and daily commuting.

Residents have recently reported incidents of muggings, armed robberies, and intimidation, particularly during early morning and late evening hours.

Police said the latest operation was intelligence-led and part of a broader strategy to dismantle organised criminal networks disrupting movement and economic activity in the region.

During the raid, officers recovered two pangas suspected to have been used in robberies, as well as two mobile phones believed to have facilitated coordination of criminal activities.

The devices are expected to undergo forensic analysis to identify possible accomplices and additional criminal links.

The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Authorities indicated that more arrests could follow as security agencies widen the probe.

Police have since intensified patrols along the affected routes and established additional surveillance measures to deter further criminal activity.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to restoring public confidence and ensuring the safety of residents, motorists, and businesses across Kwale County and the wider Coast region.

Members of the public have been urged to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities.
