Police destroy 2,000 litres of illicit brew in Nairobi crackdown

Police have destroyed approximately 2,000 litres of illicit brew in Soweto, Nairobi, following a targeted operation aimed at curbing illegal alcohol production and drug-related activities.

The operation, conducted by the National Police Service, is part of ongoing efforts to address the rising cases of substance abuse that continue to pose serious social, economic, and public health risks in communities.

Authorities said the crackdown led to the seizure and destruction of large quantities of kangara, a locally brewed illicit alcohol, along with equipment used in its production.

“During the exercise, we confiscated and destroyed approximately 2,000 litres of kangara and dismantled several brewing setups used in its production,” police said in a statement.

Officials noted that dismantling such operations disrupts illegal supply chains and acts as a deterrent to those involved in the trade.

“This intervention is part of our broader commitment to safeguarding community well-being through proactive and continuous enforcement measures,” the statement added.

The police reaffirmed that similar operations will continue across the country to combat drug and substance abuse.

“We will sustain these operations to ensure long-term impact, reinforce prevention strategies, and support national efforts to effectively deal with illicit brews and narcotic substances,” the service stated.

The crackdown comes amid growing concern over the effects of illicit alcohol, which has been linked to health complications, deaths, and increased crime in several parts of the country.
