Although his planned debut at the Bathurst 1000 that same year was derailed by a major crash involving his team, he quickly rebounded. In 1987, he captured the Australian 2.0 Litre Touring Car Championship in a Nissan Gazelle and made his Bathurst debut.

By the late 1980s, he had progressed into factory-backed drives with Nissan and also achieved early endurance success.

In 1989, he claimed victory at the Sandown 500 and secured his first Bathurst podium with third place finish. 

He later won three consecutive Australian Drivers’ Championships (1991-1993), earning multiple CAMS Gold Stars. 

Transitioning into full-time touring car competition in the Australian Touring Car Championship, Mark Skaife became a dominant force. He claimed major race wins early in the 1990s and secured back-to-back Bathurst victories in 1991 and 1992 with Jim Richards.

Over the following years, he added further endurance race wins and a fifth Bathurst crown in 2005, while also taking on team ownership responsibilities.

After retiring from full-time racing in 2008, he continued to excel in endurance events, achieving notable victories including the 2010 Bathurst 1000 and multiple Phillip Island wins.
