Man killed in landslide incident at quarry in Metkei, Elgeyo Marakwet

A 39-year-old man was buried alive after a quarry he was digging caved in following a landslide incident in Metkei, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The incident happened in Kamwosor quarry on April 28, 2026 and left one Eric Waswa dead. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Officials linked the incident to ongoing rains being experienced in many parts of the country.

Elsewhere, police say they are investigating five separate drowning incidents. The incidents were reported in Makueni, Taita Taveta, Elgeyo Marakwet, Siaya, Bungoma, and Uasin Gishu Counties.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending autopsies. Police say drowning incidents have been regarded part of the leading causes of death in the country. This has been linked to flooding.

The meteorological department has also warned of more rains in the coming days which may worsen the situation.

And 13 people were killed on Tuesday night in separate road accidents in the country. The accidents claimed the lives of seven pedestrians, three riders, two pillion passengers and a driver. Police said the accidents left 27 people with multiple injuries and hospitalized.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise amid efforts to address the menace.

Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country, continuing to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, have also been identified as significant contributors to the growing number of crashes.

In addition to driver negligence, poor road conditions such as potholes, confusing signage, and inadequate lighting make travel increasingly hazardous, particularly at night.

There is a campaign ongoing to address the menace in the country. This is because the accidents have left many families suffering in different ways.
