Man aged 29 killed in electrocution incident at mining site in Kakamega


Police in Kakamega East Sub-County are investigating an electrocution incident that claimed the life of a 29-year-old man at a mining site in Shipalo village.

The incident occurred on Friday at around 11:00 am.

The victim, identified as Dennis Ambei from Tiriki, Vihiga County, was reportedly working in a mining hole within the compound of Nicholas Chapuna when he came into contact with electricity and was electrocuted instantly.

Police officers from Khayega Police Station, together with detectives from DCI Kakamega East, visited the scene located about four kilometres south of the station and confirmed the incident.

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the victim may have been electrocuted by electricity tapped within the compound belonging to the landowner.

The scene was processed before the body was moved to Kakamega County General Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examination.

Police said further investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether negligence may have contributed to the death.

And police in Rangwe, Homa Bay County, have launched investigations after partially decomposed human remains were discovered in a farm at Karacham village.

According to police, the incident was reported on Thursday afternoon.

A resident was slashing grass on a family farm when he stumbled upon what appeared to be human remains.

Officers who visited the scene alongside detectives from DCI Rangwe established that the remains included a human skull in a partially decomposed state, with several other body parts missing.

Police also recovered a black button phone believed to be an iTel handset containing two SIM cards, a pair of black gumboots, blue jeans trousers with a belt and a white plastic bottle suspected to contain poison.

The scene was processed and documented before the remains were moved to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary pending identification and postmortem examination.

Investigators said inquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the death. Detectives in Homa Bay County have arrested a man accused of murdering his wife in Ndhiwa before going into hiding.

According to police, officers from the DCI Ndhiwa Sub-County, with the assistance of local administrators and members of the public, tracked down and arrested the suspect on Friday afternoon.

Police identified the suspect who is accused of killing his wife, Caroline Achieng, in an earlier incident reported at Pala area within Ndhiwa Sub-County.

Investigators said the suspect disappeared after the incident but was eventually traced to his hideout in Sagero village, Central Division, Suba Central Sub-County.

He is currently being held at Ndhiwa Police Station pending his arraignment before the Ndhiwa Law Courts on May 25 for a miscellaneous application linked to the murder investigations.

And police in Kibwezi West, Makueni County, are investigating a murder and mob justice incident that left one man dead and another injured in Mtito Andei township.

The incident occurred on Friday at around 2pm in the Riverside area, where a man was allegedly assaulted inside his house.

Police officers who responded to the scene, found the victim lying in a pool of blood with deep head injuries.

He was identified as Sammy Kioko alias “Kibaki,” a 32-year-old Kamba male.

He was rushed to Mtito Andei Sub County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was later preserved at the facility pending postmortem examination.

Police said the suspect is alleged to have attacked the victim using a machete (panga).

He was later arrested by members of the public at Mtito Andei shopping centre and reportedly subjected to mob assault before being rescued by police.

The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged before being placed in custody.

The murder weapon was recovered and the scene processed by investigators.

Police have condemned the mob action and said investigations into both the homicide and assault of the suspect are ongoing.
