Harambee Starlets Coach Beldine Odemba Eyes Squad Shake-Up Ahead of WAFCON 2027

Harambee Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba has hinted at possible changes to her squad as preparations intensify for the 2027 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), following the team’s encouraging performance at the recent four-nation tournament in Zambia.

The Starlets finished third in the competition after recovering from a disappointing defeat in the semifinals.

Kenya opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw before losing 4-1 on penalties in the decisive fixture, but responded strongly with a commanding 6-0 victory over Lesotho in the third-place playoff.

Speaking after the emphatic win, Odemba expressed satisfaction with her team’s display, particularly their attacking improvement, which she believes is beginning to bear fruit.

“We got a win and that is good for us. We have been working on our scoring, and being able to score six goals in such a tournament shows that we can do even better,” said Odemba.

“As usual, the players followed instructions well and executed the game plan effectively. They played with discipline and determination.”

The coach praised her players for maintaining focus against a Lesotho side she described as competitive despite the one-sided scoreline.

“They also wanted a win, so it is good for us to come away with something. We did not see Lesotho as an easy team. They came hard at us and tested us, but I am happy the girls gave their all and secured the victory,” she said.

Odemba, who celebrated her birthday during the tournament, described the triumph as a special gift from her players.

“They gave me a very good birthday gift,” she added with a smile.

Looking ahead to WAFCON 2027, the coach said the team is close to achieving the balance she desires, although a few adjustments may still be required.

“I feel the team is ready. There are just two or three things we need to work on, but overall we are all set,” Odemba noted.

She revealed that tactical refinements could lead to a few changes in personnel as she seeks to strengthen the squad ahead of the continental showpiece.

“We have improved our scoring and made progress tactically. We might see a change of about three players as we continue building the team,” she said.

The encouraging performances in Zambia have boosted confidence within the Starlets camp as Kenya continues its preparations for WAFCON 2027, where the team hopes to make a strong impact on the continental stage.
