KeNHA Announces Temporary Closure of Mombasa Road Section for Footbridge Installation

Motorists using Mombasa Road have been advised to prepare for traffic disruptions after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the temporary closure of a section of the busy highway to facilitate ongoing infrastructure works.

In a public notice issued on June 12, KeNHA said the closure will affect the Nairobi-bound carriageway between Airtel Complex and General Motors along the A8 highway.

According to the authority, the affected section will be closed from 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026, until 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of the Nairobi-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8), between Airtel Complex and General Motors, will be temporarily closed to traffic from Saturday, June 20, 2026, to Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 9.00 p.m. to 10.00 a.m.,” the notice stated.

KeNHA explained that the closure is necessary to allow contractors to install fabricated beams for the Airtel Footbridge, a project aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety along the highway.

“This is to allow for installation of the fabricated footbridge beams of the Airtel Footbridge across the Nairobi-bound carriageway,” the authority said.

Motorists travelling along the route have been urged to plan their journeys in advance and follow traffic management measures that will be put in place during the construction works.

The affected stretch is one of the country’s most important transport corridors, serving as a key link between the Port of Mombasa, Nairobi, western Kenya and neighbouring East African countries.

The road carries thousands of commuters, cargo trucks and airport-bound vehicles every day.

The footbridge project is expected to improve safety for pedestrians who frequently cross the highway, reducing the risk of accidents on a section known for heavy traffic and high-speed movement.

KeNHA has appealed to road users to cooperate with traffic officers and observe all directional signs during the temporary closure period to ensure smooth movement and safety for all road users.
