In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, Raila Junior acknowledged seeing the video and the conversations it had generated online.
“I have seen the video and the comments circulating about me greeting wananchi through a fence.”
He then sought to correct what he described as a misunderstanding about the location.
“For clarity: this was not at the President’s private home. It took place at the public airstrip in Kilgoris.”
According to Raila Odinga Junior, he had just arrived by aircraft when a group of residents who recognised him called out to him and asked to greet him.
He explained that the fence visible in the footage was not a barrier erected to keep residents away from him, but a safety structure separating members of the public from the aircraft landing area.
“As I alighted from the aircraft, a group of wananchi who recognised me waved me over and asked to greet me,” he said.
He added that he simply responded to the greetings in the ordinary manner expected when interacting with members of the public.
Video sparks online debate
The video emerged amid heightened public attention surrounding events in Kilgoris, where President Ruto’s daughter Charlene Ruto recently held her traditional marriage ceremony.
Raila Junior was among the prominent personalities associated with the high-profile event, adding another layer of interest when footage of him interacting with residents circulated online.
The short clip showed him walking along the perimeter of the airstrip and engaging with people gathered on the opposite side of a chain-link fence.
