Woman Arrested Over Alleged Fraudulent Transfer of Deceased Estate Land

A woman has been arrested in Ruiru over allegations that she was involved in the fraudulent transfer and sale of land belonging to the estate of a deceased person.

Agnes Wairimu Gachanja was apprehended by detectives from the Land Fraud Investigations Unit (LFIU) on August 19, 2026, while attending a defence hearing in an unrelated land fraud matter that is also being investigated by the unit.

The investigation into the latest case began after two administrators of their late father’s estate raised concerns over the ownership of a parcel of land in Juja Farm.

The deceased died in 2008, and his children discovered the suspected irregular transfer while conducting an official search at the Thika Land Registry as part of the succession process.

According to investigators, the parcel, measuring approximately 0.0825 hectares, had been transferred to another person without the knowledge or approval of the estate administrators.

Further inquiries by the LFIU allegedly established that the property was later sold for Sh800,000.

After completing investigations, detectives submitted a duplicate police case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review.

The ODPP agreed with the recommendation by the investigating officer that Gachanja should face three charges: conspiracy to defraud, uttering false documents and intermeddling with the property of a deceased person.

The suspect was subsequently processed and is expected to appear before the Ruiru Law Courts on August 20, 2026, to answer to the charges.

The DCI said it will continue pursuing cases involving the alleged illegal acquisition, transfer and disposal of property belonging to deceased estates, with the aim of protecting beneficiaries and ensuring suspects are brought before the law.
