PPOK chairman Misati calls for action against hooliganism

Progressive Party of Kenya (PPOK) chairman Evans Misati has called for tougher action against politicians and aspirants accused of sponsoring hooliganism, gang activities and political violence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Misati urged state agencies, including the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), to scrutinise the conduct of political aspirants and take action against those found to be engaging in or sponsoring activities that threaten peace and public order.

He spoke in Likoni, Mombasa, after receiving the endorsement and blessings of Mijikenda Kaya elders, as he continued his engagements with political leaders and communities along the Coast.

The PPOK chairman also held meetings with several aspirants, among them Likoni politician Evans Momanyi, as part of his efforts to strengthen political networks ahead of the 2027 elections.

The elders, led by Mzee Mwalimu Mgwisho, called on politicians seeking elective positions to embrace peaceful engagement with communities and avoid rhetoric and activities that could fuel divisions.

They urged aspirants to compete on the basis of their development agendas and ability to unite communities rather than through intimidation, violence or mobilisation of youth gangs.

During the meeting, the elders bestowed on Misati the Mijikenda name “Makuto,” meaning a unifying factor.

The honour was presented as a symbol of his perceived role in promoting unity and bringing communities together at a time when political competition is increasingly taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Misati said political leaders had a responsibility to protect peace and ensure that young people were not exploited for political violence.

He called on relevant institutions to act firmly against individuals who use gangs or hooliganism as tools of political mobilisation, warning that unchecked violence could undermine peaceful participation in the electoral process.

The call comes as political activity intensifies across the country, with aspirants beginning to build alliances and consolidate support ahead of the 2027 polls.
