One-and-a-half-year-old boy drowns in rainwater pond in Kilifi

A one-and-a-half-year-old boy drowned in a rainwater pond in Kobani Village, Ganze Sub-County, Kilifi County.

The incident occurred on Monday, September 28, 2026, at about 5:30pm, police said.

Police visited the scene and established that the child, had been left under the care of his grandmother after his mother, went to work.

The grandmother reportedly later went to the farm, leaving the boy in the care of his 13-year-old brother. Upon returning, she could not find the child, while the boy’s brother was unable to account for his whereabouts.

A search was launched, leading to the discovery of the child’s body in a nearby rainwater pond measuring approximately two meters deep. The pond had been reserved for agricultural use.

The body was retrieved and taken to Kilifi County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

And a 30-year-old woman drowned while taking a bath in Sigar River in Butere, Kakamega County, on Sunday evening.

Police identified the deceased as Lucy Awino, who was found lying on the riverbank after residents reported the incident to the assistant chief of Ebukuti Sub-location.

The body had visible injuries around the mouth, eyes, left breast and ears.

The deceased’s father, told police that his daughter had been living with epilepsy.

The body was taken to Butere County Hospital Mortuary, where it was preserved pending a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause and circumstances of her death.

Police have commenced investigations into the incident.

Elsewhere, police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.

Police in Meru County have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was found in Ngaya Forest.

The body was discovered on Monday, September 28, 2026, police said.

Police officers from Mutuati, led by the Deputy Officer Commanding Station, together with DCI officers, visited the scene and found the body of an unidentified African man believed to be about 45 years old.

The man had sustained an apparent head injury. Police documented the scene before removing the body to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.

The body is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination and identification as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
