Nairobi Faces Severe Flooding And Traffic Disruptions As Long Rains Begin

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department’s estimates, flooding and traffic congestion have significantly impacted Nairobi’s main highways as the protracted rains begin.

On March 9, 2025, the agency had issued a warning, stating that flooding was possible in multiple areas due to heavy rainfall surpassing 20 mm in a 24-hour period.

Parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the East and West Highlands, Nairobi, and the Lowlands are among the regions that are anticipated to be affected by the rainfall.

The public was cautioned by the meteorologists to be on the lookout for flash floods, low visibility, and slick roads.

They also advised against hiding near windows with grills or behind trees.

The department advised drivers to use caution when driving on slick roads and to be mindful of decreased visibility.

In response, drivers are being cautioned by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to stay off flooded roadways.

The NTSA cautioned that a shallow puddle can be deeper and more dangerous than it seems. Traffic in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) saw severe delays when the rain started.

The Nairobi Expressway, Jogoo Road, Waiyaki Way, Outering Road, and Thika Superhighway were among the major thoroughfares that were extremely clogged.

Waiyaki Way near Chiromo was also affected, and traffic on the Thika Superhighway extended from KCA University into the central business district.

Furthermore, there were significant traffic bottlenecks on Outering Road near the Donholm Interchange, which primarily affected the entrance to Manyanja and Savannah roads.

Large puddles were difficult for commuters to avoid as they entered the central business district.

Because visibility might be significantly reduced and accidents are more likely to occur, the NTSA has advised drivers to avoid driving during periods of heavy rainfall.

Additionally, the authority cautioned against trying to cross flooded roadways because it could be hazardous due to swiftly flowing water.

Many roads are predicted to be submerged due to the ongoing El Niño rains, and vehicles are advised to slow down when it’s raining.

Rain can reduce vision and speeding on slick roads can cause sliding, both of which increase the danger of an accident.

Furthermore, the NTSA advises drivers to maintain clear windshields by using their wipers frequently and making sure they are in good operating order.

Turning on headlights is essential when driving in severe rain so that other drivers can see your car.
