President William Ruto announced that all Kenyan citizens would receive national identity (ID) cards free of charge.
Speaking during a visit to Nairobi’s Kibra slums, the President vowed to eliminate the biases and bureaucracy that have long been associated with the ID issuance process.
“I’ve said that issues of discrimination regarding IDs must end; every citizen should receive an ID.
Today, I am announcing here in Kibra that IDs will be issued for free to all, through a fair process that is free of any bias,” President Ruto declared.
This announcement was met with approval from many Kenyans, particularly those who had previously expressed discontent over the introduction of fees for ID issuance.
Earlier, on February 5, 2025, during a tour of the Northeastern region, the President also abolished the vetting requirement for certain areas during the ID application process.
“Today, I’ve said that the vetting is over; no more discrimination against certain groups.
This has gone on for 60 years, and we are putting an end to it,” Ruto remarked, emphasizing that the move would promote equality across the country.
While removing the vetting process and offering IDs for free, President Ruto’s government has reassured the public that it will uphold the integrity and security of the ID issuance process.
This comes after concerns were raised by some Kenyans, including political leaders and other stakeholders,
