Athletics World Mourns the Death of Former Kenyan Steeplechase Star Jairus Birech Kipchoge

The global athletics community is in mourning following the passing of former Kenyan 3,000m steeplechase star Jairus Birech Kipchoge, who died on Thursday evening at approximately 8:30 PM.

News of Birech’s untimely death was first shared by Jordan Guenther, an American athletics enthusiast and well-known supporter of Kenyan runners, who relayed a message from the athlete’s family.

“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we, the family of Jairus Kipchoge Birech (KapKitiyo), former 3,000m steeplechase athlete, announce his passing,” read the family’s statement.

The family has requested prayers and support as they come to terms with the profound loss.

Kenyans and members of the athletics community have flooded social media with messages of condolence and remembrance.

“My deepest condolences to the family of the late Jairus. This news finds me in shock. A friend I personally knew—we even traveled abroad together the same year we began our careers as athletes—is no more. Go well, brother, till we meet again and sing with the angels, where there will be no death anymore.”

Another tribute came from Wesley Chepkwony, who praised Birech’s athletic legacy:

“This one hurts. This guy was lethal in 2015. He ran the world lead that year. During the World Championships in Beijing, he controlled the pace and ensured Kenya secured a 1–4 finish.”

Born on December 14, 1992, Birech rose through the ranks to become one of Kenya’s most accomplished steeplechasers.

Known for his relentless pace and smooth hurdling technique, he left a lasting legacy on the global stage.

Birech’s career highlights include:

  • Diamond League Final Champion
  • African Champion
  • Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist
  • Top-8 finish at the World Championships

He clocked a personal best of 7:58.41 in the 3,000m steeplechase on September 5, 2014, one of the fastest times ever recorded in the event.

But Birech’s talent extended beyond the barriers. He ran:

  • 7:41.83 for the flat 3,000m
  • 1:00:33 for the half marathon (Milan, 2019)
  • 27:52 for the 10km road race (New Orleans)
