Bahati Kioko has officially declared his intention to contest the Mathare parliamentary seat in the August 10, 2027, General Election, pledging to champion youth empowerment, education, employment and improved opportunities for residents.
In a public declaration addressed to the people of Mathare, Kioko described himself as a son of the constituency who was born and raised in the area, saying he was seeking to bring leadership closer to the community.
He argued that Mathare residents needed a representative who understands their everyday challenges, particularly those affecting people living in informal settlements.
“Nasimnajua hakuna mgeni anaweza kutembelea na kuelewa shida za kwako nyumbani kama mtoto wa nyumbani,” Kioko said, suggesting that someone raised in the constituency would better understand its problems.
The aspirant also expressed concern over the challenges facing young people, particularly unemployment, crime and involvement in political goonism.
He pledged to prioritise job creation and professional opportunities, insisting that young people needed sustainable economic empowerment rather than temporary financial handouts.
“Our young people deserve jobs, not handouts; professionalism, not goonism,” he stated.
On education, Kioko promised to advocate for equal access to learning opportunities and bursaries for children from all backgrounds, regardless of their ethnic identity or economic circumstances.
He maintained that education should remain an important tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, particularly among children growing up in Mathare’s informal settlements.
Reflecting on his political journey, Kioko recalled contesting the Mathare parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Election, saying he made a last-minute decision to join the race but still mounted a spirited campaign.
He claimed that despite entering the contest late, he gave his political opponents a strong challenge.
Kioko also referenced the intervention of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, popularly known as Baba, saying he eventually agreed to step down following persuasion during the 2022 political contest.
The aspirant said his decision to return to the political arena was motivated by his desire to create opportunities for children and young people growing up in the same environment he experienced.
He further pledged to empower women, support youth initiatives and promote an environment where residents can pursue their ambitions without being limited by poverty.
Kioko announced that he would begin engaging residents in the coming months to present his manifesto and outline his development priorities for the constituency.
“I officially declare my intention to vie for Member of Parliament in the 2027 General Election. I humbly ask for your prayers, support and, ultimately, your votes on August 10, 2027,” he announced.
His declaration adds to the political activity expected to shape the Mathare parliamentary contest as aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
Kioko concluded his announcement by appealing for support from residents, describing his candidature as an opportunity to bring leadership back to the community where he grew up.
