Police in Bamburi, Mombasa County, are investigating a suspected poisoning incident involving a 32-year-old woman who has been bedridden for nine months after falling ill during her birthday celebration.
Rose Mwende Mala reportedly fell ill on February 14, 2026, while celebrating her 32nd birthday with friends in Mombasa.
According to accounts from her family, the celebration took an unexpected turn when Rose suddenly fell asleep while seated at the party table. She was subsequently rushed to hospital after her condition deteriorated.
However, what was expected to be a temporary medical emergency developed into a prolonged health crisis, with Rose reportedly remaining unable to speak or regain her normal functioning since the incident.
She spent several months receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors reportedly identified severe brain damage estimated by the family to have affected approximately 50 per cent of her brain.
The injuries have left her unable to walk, talk, see or feed herself, requiring round-the-clock assistance with her daily activities.
Her family has raised concerns about the possibility of poisoning, saying medical observations reportedly suggested that exposure to toxic substances, potentially lead or zinc, could be linked to her condition.
However, the exact cause of her illness remains unconfirmed, with no publicly established toxicology findings identifying a specific substance responsible for her condition.
Following the incident, the family reported the matter at Bamburi Police Station, prompting investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Police are reportedly examining the circumstances surrounding the birthday celebration and what may have happened before Rose suddenly became unwell.
No arrests have been announced, and investigators have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the suspected poisoning.
Meanwhile, Rose’s mother, Patricia Mala, has taken on the responsibility of caring for her daughter as the family continues to seek medical assistance and support.
The prolonged medical crisis has also prompted appeals for financial assistance from relatives and friends, including Fridah Muya, who have urged well-wishers to contribute towards Rose’s treatment, rehabilitation, therapy and ongoing care.
The family says the financial demands of caring for Rose remain significant, particularly given her need for specialised medical attention and assistance with basic daily activities.
They have appealed to members of the public, organisations and well-wishers to support their efforts as they continue seeking answers about what happened during the birthday celebration.
The family has also cautioned social media users against spreading unverified allegations or rumours about the incident, urging the public to respect Rose’s privacy and allow investigators to establish the facts.
As investigations continue, the circumstances surrounding Rose’s sudden illness remain unclear, leaving her family hoping for answers and support as they navigate the difficult journey of her recovery.
