FKF Special General Meeting in Meru Disrupted After Police Fire Teargas Inside Venue

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Special General Meeting (SGM) in Meru was disrupted on Saturday after officers from the Police Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) reportedly fired teargas inside the meeting venue, forcing proceedings to stall before delegates could commence the meeting.

The incident occurred while delegates were already seated and waiting for the meeting to begin, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding the police operation and its impact on the federation’s constitutional processes.

FKF expressed concern over the incident, saying the deployment of RDU officers disrupted a meeting convened by members of the General Assembly in exercise of their mandate under the federation’s constitution.

In a statement, the federation said the meeting had not commenced when officers entered the venue and discharged teargas into the room where delegates were seated.

“The FKF Special General Meeting is yet to commence following an incident in which officers from the Police Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) moved into the meeting venue and discharged teargas into the meeting room, where delegates were seated awaiting the start of proceedings,” the federation said.

The disruption came amid claims of tension between rival groups linked to football administrator Hussein Mohammed and former international footballer McDonald Mariga.

Mariga reportedly alleged that delegates allied to him had been chased away from the venue by groups he described as goons, leaving supporters of Hussein Mohammed inside the meeting hall.

The allegations added to the uncertainty surrounding the gathering, which was expected to bring together members of the FKF General Assembly to deliberate on matters affecting the federation.

The meeting, held at Three Steers Hotel in Meru, had been scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and was expected to bring together approximately 91 delegates representing FKF members. Representatives from FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Kenyan government were also expected to attend as observers.

The SGM was convened against the backdrop of a prolonged leadership dispute between FKF President Hussein Mohammed and his deputy, McDonald Mariga. The disagreement has exposed divisions within the federation’s National Executive Committee (NEC) over its administration and governance.

Among the key issues expected to be discussed was the conduct of seven NEC members, including Mariga, and the circumstances surrounding previous decisions made by the federation’s leadership.

The meeting was also expected to provide delegates with an opportunity to deliberate on the future of the affected officials, with constitutional provisions requiring a two-thirds majority for the removal of NEC members.

The latest disruption has raised fresh concerns about the stability of Kenyan football administration, particularly as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

FKF said it would provide further updates as the situation develops, leaving uncertainty over when the Special General Meeting would resume.
