The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has suffered a major blow ahead of the upcoming by-elections after its Magarini candidate, Furaha Chengo Ngumbao, announced his resignation from the party, citing frustrations with top party officials.
In a letter released on Monday, Ngumbao a member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) accused the National Elections Board (NEB) and Secretary-General Hezron Obanga of creating a hostile environment for aspirants.
“My experience with the party’s leadership, particularly the NEB and SG, has been profoundly disappointing. The persistent lack of communication, disregard for grassroots concerns, and failure to provide clear directives have left aspirants like myself struggling to navigate the process,” Ngumbao stated.
He further criticized what he described as opaque decision-making and the marginalization of NEC members from key deliberations, saying these issues had eroded his confidence in the party’s leadership.
“I hope future leadership will prioritize transparency, inclusivity, and accountability,” he added, while urging the party to rebuild trust and enhance engagement with its members to avoid alienating supporters.
Ngumbao’s departure comes just days after he received the DCP nomination certificate on September 18 from Secretary-General Obanga, who at the time expressed full confidence in his candidacy.
The resignation is expected to significantly impact the party’s ambitions in the upcoming Magarini by-election, scheduled for November 27, where DCP had hoped to secure a seat in Kilifi County.
The Magarini parliamentary seat became vacant following a court decision that annulled the 2022 election results after a successful petition.
Ngumbao’s exit raises questions about internal cohesion within the DCP as it prepares for the high-stakes by-election, and may prompt further scrutiny of the party’s internal governance structures.
