DOCUMENTARY: “THE HUSTLER’S MIRROR: The William Ruto Story”

When William Ruto stood on the stage at Kasarani Stadium in September 2022, hand on the Bible, flanked by his family and thousands of supporters, it marked more than just a presidential inauguration. It was the culmination of a remarkable journey a story of defiance, faith, and shrewd political calculation. It was the story of a man who rose from the dusty rural paths of Kamagut village to the marbled floors of State House.

Early Life and Background

Born on December 21, 1966, in Sugoi village, Uasin Gishu County, William Samoei Ruto’s roots are firmly planted in Kenya’s fertile Rift Valley. The youngest of seven children, he grew up in a humble household where his parents, Daniel and Sarah Cheruiyot, toiled as subsistence farmers.

The simplicity of rural life shaped Ruto’s worldview early. He understood the daily struggles of farmers and small-scale traders the very people many politicians overlooked. It was in these struggles that he would later find his political identity, as a champion of the “hustler” class, the everyday Kenyan trying to make a living.

Education and Early Ambitions

From Wareng Primary to Kericho High School, Ruto showed promise as a natural leader and student of the sciences. At Kenyatta University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Botany and Zoology followed by a Master’s degree in Plant Ecology, he also cut his teeth in student politics. These formative years laid the groundwork for a career that would blend policy, grassroots activism, and ambition.

Family and children

In 1991, William Ruto married Rachel Chebet, a woman whose quiet strength and deep Christian faith would go on to shape not only their home but also her role as Kenya’s First Lady. A proud Kenyan, Rachel has dedicated much of her life to faith-based and community work, earning respect for her unwavering commitment to empowering families, women, and young people across the country.

Together, they have been blessed with seven children. Among them is Nick Ruto, a lawyer and the most publicly recognized of the siblings. There is also Charleen Ruto, who occasionally appears alongside her parents at public events, and George Ruto, who tends to keep a low profile while running a matatu business a clear sign of the family’s encouragement of hard work and entrepreneurship. The names and personal lives of the other children have largely been kept out of the public eye, reflecting the Rutos’ deliberate effort to protect their family’s privacy and give their children a grounded upbringing, despite the spotlight that comes with political leadership.

The Ruto household is deeply rooted in Christian values, prayer, and a strong sense of unity. The family is often seen together during church services, national functions, and community events always portraying a close-knit and supportive image. Rachel plays a vital role in nurturing this spirit, leading prayer gatherings, advocating for family-centered initiatives, and championing causes that uplift women and youth throughout the country.

Despite the demands of a high-profile political life, the Rutos have maintained a private, humble, and deeply respectful family environment. Known not just for their public service, they are admired for the strength of their family bond a home anchored in faith, love, and unwavering commitment to one another and to the nation they serve.

Political Career: The Rise of the Hustler

Ruto’s political journey formally began in 1997, winning the Eldoret North parliamentary seat at just 30. Known for his fiery speeches and grassroots connection, he quickly became a symbol of youthful energy and determination.

Over the years, he held key cabinet positions:

  • Minister of Home Affairs, navigating security and administration in turbulent times.
  • Minister of Agriculture, pushing reforms to uplift farmers, the backbone of Kenya’s economy.
  • Minister of Higher Education, advocating for expanded access and innovation.

In 2013, Ruto was elected Deputy President under Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee coalition, a partnership that would shape Kenyan politics for the next decade.

Scandals and Controversies

Ruto’s path was never smooth. His political life was marred by serious allegations:

  • The International Criminal Court indicted him in 2013 for alleged crimes against humanity linked to the 2007-2008 post-election violence. A politically charged trial ensued, ending in 2016 when the ICC dropped the charges for lack of evidence.
  • Throughout his tenure, accusations of corruption and misuse of power dogged him. Critics accused him of amassing wealth illicitly; he responded by branding himself a victim of political persecution.
  • His political style often stoked rivalry, even fracturing his alliance with President Uhuru Kenyatta, leading to dramatic realignments ahead of the 2022 election.

The Road to the Presidency

In 2022, Ruto ran on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, championing the “Hustler Nation” a movement promising to dismantle Kenya’s entrenched political dynasties and empower ordinary citizens.

His flagship policy, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), promised:

  • A Hustler Fund to support small businesses.
  • Cutting the cost of living by lowering food and fuel prices.
  • Job creation through investments in housing, agriculture, and digital innovation.

Despite a fiercely contested election, on September 15, 2022, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declared William Ruto the President-elect of Kenya.

Presidency: Challenges and Controversies

Barely months into office, the honeymoon faded. Kenya grappled with a fragile economy rising debt, inflation, and a weakening shilling hit ordinary Kenyans hard. The government launched the Hustler Fund in December 2022, offering mobile loans to small traders a beacon of hope but also a reminder of the limits of microfinance solutions.

Facing pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ruto’s administration cut fuel subsidies and public spending and imposed controversial taxes, igniting public anger.

In mid-2024, the Finance Bill an omnibus tax measure sparked widespread protests led primarily by Kenya’s youth, mobilizing on social media platforms like TikTok, Twitter (X), and Instagram. From June 18 to August 8, 2024, Kenya experienced its largest youth-led uprisings in decades. Scenes of demonstrators storming Parliament, clashes with police, and tragic casualties unfolded live on television.

The 2024 Uprising: A Nation Roars

  • Official reports cited 39 deaths and hundreds injured.
  • Mass arrests and abductions were documented; many remain missing or unaccounted for.
  • The government deployed riot police, tear gas, and live ammunition in an attempt to quell the unrest.

In response, President Ruto took unprecedented action dismissing all 21 Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General in July 2024, including key allies, in a bid to reset his government and regain public trust.

Despite this shake-up, tensions remained high. A second wave of protests erupted in June 2025 following the custodial death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, underscoring ongoing issues of police brutality, corruption, and economic hardship.

Leadership Amid Turmoil

Abroad, Ruto projected a confident image: hosting the Africa Climate Summit in 2023, advocating for climate justice, and strengthening ties with the United States and regional partners. But at home, cracks deepened.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga and civil society groups challenged the administration, while youth demanded accountability and dignity.

Ruto, a devout evangelical Christian, often invoked faith and moral responsibility, seeking to unite a fractured nation.

His wife, First Lady Rachel Ruto, championed women’s empowerment through microfinance, clean energy, and environmental initiatives.

Yet, the core question lingered: Could Ruto translate his “hustler” narrative into real transformation, or had the “hustler” become part of the establishment?

Narrator:

The presidency is often won through strategy but it is kept through service. For William Ruto, the journey from chicken seller to the highest office in Kenya has been defined by grit, faith, and political force of will.

But halfway through his term, his greatest challenge is trust.

The youth-led protests, economic hardships, and political divisions demand more than slogans they demand genuine change.

Ruto’s mirror now reflects a nation in motion: divided yet determined, exhausted yet unbroken.

From Kamagut’s dusty paths to State House’s corridors of power, his story is still unfolding.

In Kenya, where memory is political and legacy is contested, William Ruto faces the ultimate test not just of winning power, but of using it to serve.

The hustler’s journey is far from over, but the nation watches closely.
