Embu eyes education tourism hub after visit by French-speaking delegation

Embu County is positioning itself as a hub for education tourism following a visit by an international French-speaking delegation exploring opportunities for language learning, cultural exchange, and educational partnerships.

The delegation was received by the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Tourism, Investment, Industry Development and Marketing, Elijah Mugo, alongside Chief Officer Benjamin Mutisya and several departmental directors.

The team is collaborating with Chris Mburu, a United Nations human rights lawyer and a key supporter of the Mamre French-Speaking Village project in Siakago.

Speaking during the meeting, Mugo said the county government is keen on leveraging the initiative to position Embu as an international centre for education tourism.

“Embu County is ready to partner with international stakeholders to promote language learning, cultural exchange, and academic collaboration that will attract learners from across the world,” Mugo said.

The Mamre French-Speaking Village project, spearheaded by Ms. Jane Murekio in partnership with the Mitahato initiative, was officially launched in France on June 12, 2025.

The initiative seeks to promote French language learning while empowering local communities through education and cultural interaction.

According to project partners, the programme aims to bring international students and professionals to Embu, providing immersive language training while exposing visitors to the region’s rich culture and natural attractions.

“Through the Mamre French-Speaking Village project, we want to create an environment where people from different countries can come to learn French, exchange cultures, and experience the beauty of Embu,” Mburu noted.

County officials said the initiative will also help showcase key tourism destinations within the region, including expeditions to Mount Kenya and wildlife experiences at Mwea National Reserve.

The Embu County Government reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners to expand opportunities in education, tourism, and investment, with leaders expressing optimism that the project will boost the local economy and strengthen the county’s global connections.
