Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to give President William Ruto the space to govern over the next three years, despite the circumstances surrounding his recent impeachment.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the court decision, Gachagua emphasized the importance of continuing the fight against illicit alcohol sales, particularly in the Mt Kenya region.
At a funeral service in Kirinyaga County, Gachagua urged Ruto to delegate responsibilities to his newly appointed deputy, Kithure Kindiki, to help address the issue of illegal alcohol in the region.
He noted that many residents have expressed concerns about a resurgence in the sale of illicit brews since his departure from office.
“I want to remind those in power of the work I did in the past two years to combat this menace. Even if you do not want me, please continue the effort to protect our children,” Gachagua stated.
He shared that community members had informed him of an increase in illegal alcohol consumption since his removal.
Gachagua also called on lawmakers, especially those from the Mt Kenya region, to expedite the approval of the Coffee Bill 2023 and the Cooperative Bill 2023 with the same urgency they applied to his impeachment.
“The speed they used to impeach me should be used to pass the Coffee Bill. Let it be approved and gazetted swiftly,” he remarked.
He urged MPs to prioritize disbursing funds owed to coffee farmers, encouraging them to fight for increased support from sh 5 million to sh 7 million.
“Use the same determination you had to remove me to secure this funding for our farmers,” he advised.
Gachagua’s comments come shortly after Kithure Kindiki’s swearing-in as the new deputy president, a ceremony attended by numerous dignitaries, including President Ruto.
On social media, Gachagua shared a personal moment with his family, signaling his return to private life following his time in office.
