Government clears Sh190 billion road contractors’ bills, projects resume nationwide – DP Kindiki

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that the government has cleared all pending bills owed to road contractors, unlocking the resumption of stalled road projects across the country.

Speaking during a public address, DP Kindiki said many road projects had ground to a halt when President William Ruto assumed office in 2022 due to unpaid bills accumulated under the previous administration.

He noted that several road projects launched between 2014 and 2015 stalled at different stages, with others halting in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

“The roads that had been started years earlier had stalled across the country. By the time President Ruto was sworn into office, we had huge pending bills owed to contractors,” Kindiki said.

The Deputy President disclosed that the government owed contractors more than Sh190 billion at the time, but President Ruto has since ensured that all outstanding payments have been settled.

He said the move has restored confidence among contractors and revived the country’s road construction programme.

“As a result, all stalled roads are now back on track. Contractors are already on site, and where they are not yet present, they are on their way. We have sufficient funding to complete these projects,” he said.

Kindiki added that the government is now focusing on completing more than 6,000 kilometres of roads countrywide, marking a full revival of the national roads programme.

On electricity connectivity, the Deputy President said Kenya had 8.8 million households connected to power in 2022.

He noted that the government has since added 1.3 million new connections, bringing the total number of households connected to electricity to 10.1 million.

He said the investments in roads and electricity are part of the Kenya Kwanza Administration’s broader agenda to drive economic growth, improve service delivery and enhance livelihoods across the country.
