Hamas officially confirmed on Saturday the death of Mohammad Sinwar, its military commander in Gaza, months after Israel claimed to have killed him in an airstrike in May.
While the group did not disclose specific details surrounding his death, it released photos of Sinwar alongside other leaders, referring to them as “martyrs.”
Mohammad Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the political leader of Hamas and one of the key architects of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
Yahya Sinwar was reportedly killed in combat approximately one year later. Following his brother’s death, Mohammad rose to a senior leadership position within the organization.
With Mohammad Sinwar now confirmed dead, command of Hamas’ armed wing is expected to shift to his close ally Izz al-Din Haddad, who currently oversees military operations in northern Gaza.
Haddad is likely to assume control over the group’s armed activities across the entire enclave.
