Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has appealed to residents of the county to reject violence and uphold peace following an alleged assassination attempt on her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga.
In a statement issued on Monday evening, Governor Wanga expressed deep concern over the incident and called on security agencies to urgently investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
“I am deeply concerned about reports of an incident involving my deputy governor, Hon. Oyugi Magwanga.
Any event that raises concerns over the safety and security of our leaders requires urgent and thorough attention,” she stated.
Wanga strongly condemned the attack and urged residents to remain calm and united.
She warned against allowing violence to destabilize the region and referenced the recent killing of Kasipul MP Charles Were as a grim reminder of the need for enhanced security.
“Let us not allow fear and violence to take root. Our focus must remain on peace, justice, and the rule of law,” she said.
The incident involving Magwanga reportedly occurred on the night of Sunday, May 11, when unknown assailants opened fire on his vehicle at the entrance of his homestead.
Fortunately, Magwanga was not in the car at the time of the attack.
Speaking to the press on Monday morning, Magwanga confirmed the attempt on his life and recounted that he had received intelligence indicating he was being followed.
As a precaution, he altered his route and took additional security measures.
“When I was heading home, I got word that I was being trailed. I diverted through Gamba and approached from a different direction,” he said.
“I had instructed my team to open the gate in advance. My security detail spotted the suspects and engaged them immediately.”
Despite the attack, Magwanga urged the public to stay calm and said he would not be intimidated by those targeting him.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
