TikTok has quickly grown into one of the most popular social media platforms, allowing users to share short videos, connect with others, and engage through likes, comments, and follows. One of its features is the Friends list, which combines the people you follow who also follow you back. While having friends on TikTok can help you build a community, sometimes you may want to remove or delete a friend for personal, privacy, or content-related reasons.
This guide explains how TikTok’s friends system works and provides clear steps to delete friends on the app.
TikTok Friends
On TikTok, a friend is someone you follow who also follows you back. Unlike platforms with a formal “friend request” system, TikTok automatically adds people to your Friends list once you both follow each other. Friends often get priority in your feed, meaning their videos are more likely to appear under the “Friends” tab.
If you no longer want someone to remain in your Friends list, you can remove them either by unfollowing them or by removing them as a follower.
How to Delete Friends on TikTok
There are two main ways to delete friends:
- Unfollowing a Friend
Unfollowing someone removes them from your Friends list but doesn’t block them entirely. They may still see your public content unless you also change your privacy settings.
Steps to unfollow a friend:
- Open the TikTok app and go to your profile.
- Tap on the “Following” section to see the list of accounts you follow.
- Search for the friend you want to remove.
- Tap on their profile.
- Click the “Following” button — it will change to “Follow” once you’ve unfollowed them.
At this point, if they still follow you, they will remain a follower, but they will no longer appear on your Friends list.
- Removing a Follower
If you prefer to completely delete a friend, you need to remove them as a follower.
Steps to remove a follower:
- Go to your profile on TikTok.
- Tap on the “Followers” section.
- Locate the follower you want to remove.
- Tap on their profile.
- Click on the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner.
- Select “Remove this follower.”
Once removed, they will no longer see your private posts if your account is set to private, and they won’t appear on your Friends list anymore.
Alternative Option: Blocking a Friend
If unfollowing or removing a follower doesn’t feel enough, you can also block the user. Blocking ensures they cannot find your account, see your videos, or interact with you at all.
Steps to block a friend:
- Open their profile.
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right.
- Select “Block.”
- Confirm the action.
Blocking is a stronger measure but guarantees full privacy from unwanted interactions.
Things to Keep in Mind
- If your account is public, even after unfollowing or removing a friend, they can still see your content unless you block them.
- If your account is private, only approved followers will see your content — so removing a friend as a follower is effective.
- TikTok does not notify users when they are unfollowed, removed, or blocked.
