TikTok is one of the most popular platforms for entertainment, creativity, and connection, but like most social media apps, it enforces safety measures to protect younger users. One of these measures is the age restriction feature, also known as Restricted Mode, which filters out content that may not be suitable for all audiences.
If you find that your account is limiting what you can view, or if you want full access to TikTok without unnecessary filters, you may need to adjust or turn off age restrictions. This guide will explain what age restriction is, why it’s enabled, and how you can turn it off step by step.
What is Age Restriction on TikTok?
TikTok’s age restriction or Restricted Mode is designed to:
- Limit access to mature or sensitive content.
- Protect younger audiences from inappropriate videos.
- Give parents and guardians control over what their children can see.
When this mode is on, you may notice that certain videos, trends, or sounds don’t appear in your feed, even if they are popular among other users.
Why You Might See Age Restrictions
There are several reasons your TikTok account may have age restrictions enabled:
- Account age settings: If your profile age is set under 18, TikTok automatically applies certain restrictions.
- Parental controls: If Family Pairing is enabled, a parent or guardian may have turned on Restricted Mode.
- Manual setting: You may have unknowingly switched on Restricted Mode in your app settings.
- App updates or glitches: Sometimes after updates, the feature resets and filters your content.
How to Turn Off Age Restriction on TikTok
Here’s how to disable Restricted Mode and regain full access to TikTok content:
Step 1: Open TikTok Settings
- Open the TikTok app on your phone.
- Go to your profile by tapping the icon at the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the menu (three lines) at the top-right.
- Select Settings and Privacy.
Step 2: Locate Restricted Mode
- Scroll down to Content & Display or Digital Wellbeing (depending on your app version).
- Tap on Restricted Mode.
Step 3: Turn Off Restricted Mode
- If Restricted Mode is enabled, you’ll see an option to Turn Off.
- Enter your 4-digit passcode (the one you or your parent set when turning it on).
- Once verified, the mode will be disabled and your feed will return to normal.
If You Don’t Have the Passcode
If you don’t know the passcode:
- Ask the person who enabled the restriction (like a parent under Family Pairing).
- If you set it but forgot, reinstalling the TikTok app can reset the passcode, but this may also log you out. Make sure you know your login details first.
Check Your Account Age
If your account shows an age under 18, TikTok will continue applying restrictions automatically. In such cases, the only solution is to update your birth date by:
- Contacting TikTok support through Report a Problem in the app.
- Providing proof of age (such as an ID) if requested.
