To start off his political career, in 1957, he first became a member of the Liberal Party of Australia and joined the New South Wales State Executive in 1963. 

Additionally, from 1962 to 1964, he was the federal president of the Young Liberal a youth movement of the Liberal Party.

Later on, he acted as the State Vice-President of the Liberal Party from 1972 to 1974.

Furthermore, he served as a Shadow Treasurer and the Deputy Liberal Party Leader from 1983 to 1985.

Later on, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bennelong, New South Wales in May 1974.

From 1975 to July 1977, he was the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs under the coalition government of Malcom Fraser and Doug Anthony.

Afterwards, he acted as the Minister for Special Trade Negotiations from July 1977 to December 1977.

Later on, he became the Treasurer in 1977 up until 1983 when the coalition government lost.

Going forward from 1985 to 1989, he became the official Leader of the Opposition. He won the role again in January 1995 to March 1996.

Prime Minister

After the 1996 federal elections, he became the Prime Minister of Australia.

He also acted as the Leader of the Liberal Party after voting. In the 2004 federal election, the John Howard coalition government won again with an increased majority.

The November 2007 federal election saw John Howard lose his Member of Parliament seat for Bennelong, New South Wales. As a result, he became the second Prime Minister in Australia’s history to lose in their own electorate.

In September 2007, he officially resigned as the Prime Minister of Australia. Furthermore, he officially accepted the loss of his electorate seat.

Additionally, after his resignation from the Prime Minister role, he continued serving as the Chairman of the International Democrat Union from 2002 to 2014.

The following year after leaving office, he became the Director of Bradman Foundation, from 2008 to date.
