At the heart of every lively event at KCA University, there is that one particular voice that has always risen to become the center of every event – vibrant, compelling and unforgettable.
That voice belongs to Julius Kyalo, popularly known on campus as MC Julius Mwanafunzi.
But despite the creating of vibrant content, Julius is a full time student partaking a career in Journalism and Digital Media.
Julius’s journey began in primary school, where he was always participating in dramas and his ability to leave the crowd in stitches during his performance could earn him a prize.
“Back in primary I used to make parents laugh, I wasn’t bright – specifically kwa hizi event za prize giving day, machopi wakipewa prize pia mm hupewa juu nilikuwa mfunny,” he says.
“Before I joined KCA I had a passion – mzazi alikuwa anataka nikuwe mwalimu but for me I wanted to do journalism.” Julius narrates what fueled his decision to chase after doing a career in journalism.
He narrates how a certain disagreement between him and his parents fueled a realization – that he could create impact by just using his voice.
Binded by his love for content creation, Julius decided to chase after Journalism and Digital Media – a career that he believed goes hand in hand with his passion for content creation and emceeing.
When asked where he usually gets his ideas from, Julius smiles while answering.
“I’m a very intelligent person and if you want to make people laugh, talk about something that is common with them,” he says.
His content always go hand in hand with the daily experiences in the campus.
From creating funny skits on the students being broke to the late – night exam preparation skits, it is always easy to relate because it is always what’s happening in those moments.
“Mimi hucome up na ideas a zingine hucome naturally – especially my TikTok account, I just lift up my phone and record and it’s sent – wacha itoke natural.”
With the academic pressure, especially a course like Journalism and Digital Media and how demanding it can be, one might ask themselves how Julius is able to cope up with it.
For Julius, it is different because the support he gets grants him an easy time with his career both in journalism and content creation.
“One thing I like about KCA is the fact that they are very supportive – wakati kuna class, I always communicate earlier,” he explains.
He also grants credits to his lecturers who have always offered him support, whenever he needs it during his journey.
Major campus events always come with very major expectations – and for Julius, this is something he does not take on lightly.
“What I usually do, I have a team – so we sit down, agree and discuss what we will talk about.”
Julius adds that sometimes he just creates custom jokes on the trending topics – but makes sure that he maintains ethical standards and that the language he uses is not offensive to the audience.
“I remember my colleague aliongelelea kitu sensitive in one event, so I had to cover up.”
Behind the laughs, the many likes, also lies a journey with obstacles – moments that really put Julius into a test for his passion and self belief.
“Challenges ziko kila mahali – one thing I hate – ata nikiwa serious people tend to think I’m joking,” he adds.
Julius also adds that the treatment that his siblings are being given differentiates a lot with the one he receives from his parents, something he feels like it’s unfair. One of the greatest challenges? Online criticism.
“Saa zingine utafanya video iende viral – some people will take it in a positive way, some negatively. I also hate this thing called cyber bullying,” he admits. Despite the challenges, Julius has been able to remain determined and handle them appropriately.
When asked what he would advise someone having a dream that of being a MC or a content creator, Julius does not hang back.
“Nikona mafans wengi sana – so fan mwenye analook upto me, I would just tell them – be you, stay focused – Mungu mbele.”
Julius does not see creating of content and emceeing as just a walk over in campus – it is his foundation for something greater to come.
“Yes, what I would say – in three years to come, I want to do something different – major mostly on corporate world,” he says.
Julius also says that he is being tempted to join the political world and that, he has it in mind. “Kwa mapenzi ya Mungu, I might join politics.”
So, whether Julius is creating content that leave the audience in stitches, one thing for sure is that, this is not backing down anytime soon. Honestly, campus wouldn’t be fun without them.
