Kenya celebrates election of Judge Phoebe Okowa to International Court of Justice


Kenya has marked a historic milestone following the election of Judge Phoebe Okowa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), making her the first Kenyan to serve on the court since its establishment in 1945.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, President William Ruto congratulated Judge Okowa on her election, describing it as a moment of national pride and a clear reflection of the strong confidence placed in her by United Nations Member States.

The President noted that her appointment to fill a mid-term vacancy at the ICJ underscores her outstanding credentials, extensive experience, and proven integrity in the field of international law.

President Ruto said Judge Okowa’s success goes beyond personal achievement, adding that it highlights Kenya’s continued commitment to contributing highly qualified professionals to the global multilateral system.

He emphasized that the election reflects the country’s growing influence and credibility on the international stage.
