William Ruto Leads 2027 Race as Kalonzo Emerges Surprise Challenger in New Poll

A new opinion poll by TIFA Research has sparked fresh political debate across the country after placing William Ruto ahead in the race for the 2027 presidential election, with Kalonzo Musyoka emerging as his closest challenger.

The survey, released at a time when political temperatures are already beginning to rise despite the election being more than a year away, paints a picture of a country slowly reorganising itself ahead of what is expected to be another fiercely contested presidential battle.

According to the findings, President Ruto still commands significant support among Kenyans, suggesting that his political base remains intact even as his administration continues to face criticism over the high cost of living, taxation and unemployment.

The poll indicates that many Kenyans still view him as the frontrunner heading into 2027, giving the Kenya Kwanza camp renewed confidence.

However, the biggest talking point from the survey is the growing strength of Kalonzo Musyoka, who appears to be consolidating support as a possible opposition flagbearer.

The Wiper boss, who has previously contested for the presidency and also served as Vice President, is increasingly being viewed as a unifying figure capable of rallying opposition supporters from different regions.

Political analysts say Kalonzo’s rise in the poll could reshape opposition politics in the coming months, especially as leaders aligned to the opposition continue holding consultations on how to face Ruto in the next General Election.

His steady and calm political style is now being interpreted by some observers as a strategy aimed at positioning himself as a moderate alternative to the current administration.

The findings are also likely to trigger fresh discussions within the opposition coalition, where several influential figures are believed to be eyeing the top seat.

Kalonzo’s strong showing could strengthen his bargaining power and potentially place him at the centre of coalition talks ahead of 2027.

For President Ruto, the poll may offer a political boost after months of pressure from critics over economic hardships facing ordinary Kenyans.

His allies have consistently argued that the government’s economic reforms need more time to bear fruit, while insisting the administration remains focused on long-term transformation.

At the same time, critics of the government argue that opinion polls this far from an election should be interpreted cautiously, noting that political alliances, economic performance and public sentiment can change dramatically within a short period.

Still, the survey has already ignited conversations online, with Kenyans debating whether Ruto can maintain his lead until 2027 or whether Kalonzo can finally transform years of political experience into a serious presidential breakthrough.

With campaigns slowly beginning to take shape behind the scenes, the latest poll is a clear indication that the battle for State House is already underway, and both Ruto and Kalonzo are positioning themselves as the key faces of what could become one of Kenya’s most defining political contests in recent history.
