The Kenya Railway Corporation (KR) has announced the resumption of train services on the Nairobi- Kisumu route bringing relief to travelers ahead of the festive season.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday December 3 the Kisumu safari Train will restart operations on Friday December 6, 2024.
The train will depart Nairobi Central station every Friday at 4: 00 p.m ariving at Kisumu Station the following day at 6:00 a.m. Economy- class tickets will cost sh 900 while first -class tickets are priced at sh 2, 400.
“We are pleased to announce that our Kisumu Safari Train has resumed.
Please review the detailed schedule and prepare accordingly.
Thank you for choosing our Service!” the corporation stated.
According to the route plan, passengers will board the Madaraka Express from Nairobi Terminus to maai mahiu Station at 5:20 p.m. and arriving in kisumu at 6:30 a.m.

Travelers are advised to arrive at the station at least one hour before departure to avoid inconveniences.
Additionally, luggage should not exceed dimensions of 160cm in width and 200cm in length.
Train services on the Nairobi-Kisumu route had been suspended earlier this year due to damage caused by heavy rains and flooding .
Kenya Railways priotized passenger safety halting operations to rehabilitate the railway line.
In a prior update on November 12, KR assured the public that plans to restore the service were in advanced stages and targeted the festive season for resumption.
The revival of the Kisumu Safari Train is part of Kenya Railways’ broader strategic plan to enhance transport services including the acquisition of 480 wagons to increase passenger and cargo capacity.
The corporation is also rehabilitating various routes across the country.
The resumption of Train services is expected to alleviate road congestion as many Kenyans prepare to travel during the holiday season.
