KRA Issues Fresh Directives to Mobile Phones Importers, Travellers

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a new directive aimed at enhancing tax compliance and regulatory integrity among mobile phone importers, travelers, and local device manufacturers.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, November 5, it has been mandated that all importers must provide detailed import entries that specify accurate quantities, thorough model descriptions, and the corresponding International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers for each mobile device, with this requirement taking effect on January 1, 2025.

“Pursuant to Part B of the Second Schedule to the East African Community Customs Management Act(EACCMA,2004), on restricted imports, mobile devices require regulatory permits from the Communications Authority of Kenya,” the notice by KRA read in part.

Under the new regulations, it is mandatory for device assemblers and manufacturers to register on the KRA Customs portal.

They are also required to submit a report detailing all devices assembled for the local market, including their corresponding IMEI numbers.

“Device Assemblers/Manufacturers must register on the Customs portal and submit a report of all devices assembled for the local market and their respective IMEI numbers,” the notice read.
