A 22-year-old student from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) died on Wednesday after collapsing during a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment exercise in Chwele, Bungoma County.
According to Bungoma Central Sub-County Police Commander David Saina, the young man collapsed during the physical fitness test and was rushed to Chwele Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“The recruit fainted during the physical exercise stage and was confirmed dead on arrival at around noon. His body has been moved to the Bungoma Referral Hospital mortuary,” said Saina.
Lieutenant Colonel Eliud Yegon, who is supervising the recruitment exercise, noted that several participants were also facing challenges due to inconsistencies in their identification documents.
“We have encountered multiple cases where the names on recruits’ birth certificates differ from those on their academic documents, complicating the verification process,” Lt. Col. Yegon explained.
He further urged aspiring recruits to avoid drug use and prepare adequately for the demanding recruitment procedures.
The ongoing KDF recruitment, which runs throughout October, aims to fill positions for General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, Specialist Officers, Tradesmen and women, and other specialized roles in areas such as Education, Engineering, ICT, Mass Communication, Law, and Supply Chain Management.
