Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has announced a significant reduction in day secondary school fees, cutting the amount from sh 1,000 to sh 500 per term under the Kiharu Masomo Bora Programme 2026.
The initiative is set to benefit more than 12,000 learners enrolled in 65 public day secondary schools across the constituency, easing the financial burden on families and improving access to secondary education.
The new fee structure will take effect from Term One of 2026 and will apply to students from Grade 10 to Form Four.
In a major boost to student welfare, the programme also introduces a comprehensive school feeding initiative. All learners will receive lunch on every school day, including Saturdays.
The weekly meal plan will feature githeri for three days, rice for another three days, uji during tea breaks, and chapati on the last Friday of every month.
The feeding programme aims to enhance attendance, concentration, and overall academic performance.
To further support learning outcomes, the Kiharu NG-CDF has set aside an additional sh 10 million in the current financial year for revision materials, bringing total investment in learning resources to sh 30 million over recent years.
More than sh 50 million has also been spent on upgrading school infrastructure, with a particular focus on the construction and improvement of science laboratories.
Students joining Grade 10 in 20 identified low-enrolment and newly established schools will receive free school uniforms.
Additionally, each of the 65 day secondary schools will get sh 50,000 to support music, sports, and other co-curricular activities.
The programme includes incentives aimed at motivating educators and school leaders.
The best-performing teacher in each sub-county will be rewarded with a fully sponsored trip to Mombasa, while top-performing principals will earn international trips to destinations such as Dubai or Malaysia.
To protect parents from hidden costs, remedial programmes will be capped at sh 1,000 per term, and schools will be prohibited from imposing any additional registration or extra charges.
Insurance premiums and servicing costs for school buses owned by day secondary schools will also be covered under the programme.
The initiative applies to all learners enrolled in day secondary schools within Kiharu, including students from outside the constituency, reinforcing the programme’s inclusive approach to education support.
