Obinna urges ODM to appoint Babu Owino as Party Leader hours after Raila Odinga’s death

Comedian Oga Obinna has momentarily stepped away from showbiz to weigh in on the unfolding leadership crisis within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), just hours after the sudden death of the party’s long-serving leader, Raila Odinga.

Speaking while on his way back from Shalkido’s burial in Juja, Obinna offered unsolicited yet pointed advice to ODM on how to move forward in the wake of Raila’s passing.

With a keen focus on Nairobi County politics, the comedian urged the party to unconditionally hand Babu Owino the ODM ticket for the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race, saying that would be the only way for the party to remain politically relevant.

In a video shared on his Instagram page, Obinna insisted that denying Babu Owino the ticket would be a monumental blunder.

He argued that such a move would alienate the Gen Z constituency, which, according to him, overwhelmingly identifies with the youthful legislator.

“If ODM wants to survive or get support from the Gen Zs, they must do two things. One, and this is very important, ODM should give the party ticket to one person, the one and only Babu Owino Ogili,” he declared.

Obinna did not stop there.

He went on to outline a second strategy that, in his view, could help ODM maintain its massive following and ultimately reclaim power.

He cautioned that ODM risked internal wrangles and unnecessary tension if it failed to appoint Babu Owino as the new party leader to take over after Raila Odinga.

According to Obinna, while ODM boasts several reputable politicians capable of filling the leadership void, the party needs someone with both “the favour of the people” and “the anointing”, qualities he said Babu Owino possesses in abundance.

“And secondly, if they’re not going to make Babu the party leader, then let them appoint him as Secretary General. Without those two, patachimbika! You’ve seen how things are going. When the Gen Zs look at ODM, they see Babu.

I am not downplaying the fact that there are other reputable figures in ODM, tuko nao, but we must go with the person who has the favour and the anointing. That’s why we had Baba. Baba had favour from the people and he was anointed. Right now, the only person with both the favour and the anointing is the one and only Babu Owino,” Obinna emphasised.

His sentiments quickly gained traction online, with many of his fans agreeing that Babu Owino is indeed the ideal candidate to take over Nairobi’s top seat.

A number of social media users even drew comparisons between Babu and Governor Johnson Sakaja, arguing that the youthful MP would perform exemplarily well at City Hall if given the opportunity.
