Oga Obinna overwhelmed with emotions as he eulogises Kimani Mbugua at his burial

Murang’a County, Kenya – Former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua has finally been laid to rest at his family home in Maragua, Murang’a County.

The deceased scribe was laid to rest in an emotional ceremony attended by family, friends, and public figures who gathered to bid him a final farewell.

Among the mourners was celebrated comedian and radio personality Oga Obinna, who moved many to tears as he eulogised his late friend.

Obinna, who had played a significant role in helping Mbugua seek rehabilitation and treatment during his final days, broke down while addressing mourners.

Visibly shaken, the comedian struggled to hold back tears as he reminisced about his friendship with the late journalist.

He revealed that it pained him deeply that Mbugua passed away just when he was on the verge of being discharged from a wellness centre in Mombasa, where he had been undergoing treatment.

“It hurts that Kimani left us at a time he was almost done with his recovery. He was making great progress,” Obinna said before emotions overcame him.

A viral video from the ceremony captured the heartbreaking moment Obinna broke down mid-speech, prompting his security team to gently escort him from the podium as mourners comforted him.

Kimani’s burial came roughly two weeks after his tragic death at the Mombasa rehabilitation centre, where he is reported to have taken his own life.

His passing sent shockwaves across the country, given his earlier testimony of recovery and renewed faith.

The late journalist, who had previously struggled with mental health and substance abuse, received assistance from well-wishers including former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who facilitated his rehabilitation.

After nearly six months of treatment, Kimani was discharged in December 2024.

During that period, he had expressed gratitude for a second chance at life and spoke openly about his renewed relationship with God.

“I replaced my love for narcotics with love for God,” Kimani said in one of his final interviews, vowing to dedicate his life to serving others.

However, what was meant to be the beginning of a new chapter ended tragically, leaving behind a nation in mourning.

Kimani Mbugua’s story, once a beacon of hope and resilience, now serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the need for compassion toward those quietly battling inner struggles.
